In the first Cole Sage book, we find Cole at the low point of his career. In the past, Cole a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, worked for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Time Magazine. Now, he’s returned to the paper where he started his career, The Chicago Sentinel. Instead of writing the big stories, he’s doing the work of a rookie reporter. His “big story of the day” is a cat caught in a tree. During its rescue, the cat’s owner takes her Good Samaritan neighbor hostage. Cole witnesses something so disturbing it reawakens the journalist’s desire to write again.

Returning to the paper, Cole finds a desperate message asking for help from Ellie, one that got away. The one that has continually haunted his life. Cole drops everything and flies to California. He must find what would make her so desperate, she would call him after so many years. Cole finds her terminally ill, and abandoned by her husband. He discovers while Ellie was heavily medicated, she mistakenly signed a Power of Attorney. Now her estranged daughter Erin’s inheritance, won’t go to her, but her abusive step-father. Cole vows to find the girl and right the situation.

The path to keeping his word is blocked at every turn by the husband who abandoned her, his shady real estate deals, violent con men, street thugs and the lure of a fortune in diamonds that unite them. The anger, sorrow, and crippling guilt of twenty years fires Cole's drive to keep a promise, that in the end, will heal and return the soul to the great journalist.

Beaten, bloody but determined, Cole Sage conquers greed and hatred with a strength that only love, and a will as hard as diamond, can achieve.

The Cole Sage Series has captured the imagination of readers worldwide. All six books in the series consistently get top ratings from reviewers.

Micheal Maxwell has found a niche in the mystery, suspense, genre that gives readers an everyman hero, short on vices, long on compassion, and a sense of fair play, and the willingness to risk everything to right wrongs.

The Cole Sage Series departs from the usual, heavily sexual, profanity laced norm, and gives readers a character driven stories, with twists, turns, and page turning plot lines, but most of all a hero they can relate to and root for with each new case he finds himself involved in.

To be honest, I stumbled upon Diamonds and Cole by accident. At that time I knew nothing about Micheal Maxwell or his writing. I found the book listed as a free book on Kindle and decided to try it. I was immediately hooked and became a Cole Sage fan. Since I’ve read all the books in the series and cannot wait for the next one to appear.

A good and redeeming read

I found this book to be very well written. Anyone knowing anyone who has suffered from ALS will know what a horrible disease it is and this author recorded it very well. I don’t care to read a lot of violence, sex , foul behavior or language and have not read this author before. But, as those characters in the book found redemption, I think this author did also. I will recommend this series to my reading friends.

Very entertaining story. A bit of mystery, long lost love story, injustice taken to task, touch of religion and best of all no foul language. Cole is an honorable man trying to make a difference in the world. When he gets a call saying the love of his life, though she resides in a long away time, needs help. Many surprises are in store. Some good, some bad, some painful.

While not my typical genre, this was a very moving story and could well be a real life experience. Greed certainly does play a part in this and how people’s lives are affected by it. Cole’s ex-love calls with a dire message to help her. Hasn’t seen her in about 20 years. He makes attempts to see her and is pretty much thwarted. Finds out she’s dying and her husband has stuck her in a nursing home with no contact and cancels the insurance. Cole is pretty much miffed and goes about correcting the situation. His journey through this was a great read. Pretty fast paced. If you need a break from typical murder mysteries, this is a great book to read.

You will be amazed……

I find that most of the time, if a free book is well written, it doesn’t come to a satisfactory conclusion – to get the rest of the story, you must buy the next book. This one is one that challenges that theory. WOW! A well written novel, without gratuitous violence or profanity, in which the protagonist is a settled sensible middle aged man who holds down a job, and is a decent individual interested in doing the right thing? I have to say, this is one of the few times I’ve been blown away by a free book. There are faith issues in here, but it never gets preachy, and it falls outside of typical Christian novels because Cole doesn’t know WHAT he believes, but is still a very moral and upright man. I will read other books in the series BECAUSE this was a complete, well written story that stands alone. Michael Maxwell, my hat is off to you!

This was well written with characters who were realistic and a story line that was believable. It was nice to read a book that was not full of foul language, etc. I will be reading the next in the series.

This is the second time I’ve read this book and I suspect I’ll read it a few more times. It’s a great story with all the elements you need to entertain you as well as a great ending where it all comes together. When finished reading this book you’ll remember how wonderful our lives are and how special the relationships we share are-whether through family, good friends or acquaintances. You’ll feel better about your own life too. This book has a way of bringing you in so you can experience it and at the same time see parallels with your life. Simply put you’ll be happier after you read this book. I personally love a book that leaves me feeling satisfied and smiling. I highly recommend both this book and this author. 🙂

The characters are interesting, finely drawn and real. The story of a journalist searching for his lost love , draws you in and keeps you turning pages as he gets involved with her criminal husband and tries to right all the wrongs he comes across.

I’ve been reading some rather worthless books on my Kindle recently, and I was delighted to find one that broke the mold. The author writes well without the use of foul language or gratuitous sex. The story touched my heart and throughout the day I would look forward to my evening reading sessions. I heartily recommend this book. There was just one thing that prevented me from giving the book 5 stars–that was the “remembrances” that sometime broke the flow of the story.

Mr Maxwell delivered a most interesting mystery with ” live ” characters. It was like looking at pictures … his use of language was excellent, rich, descriptive, and I “believed” each character. I teared up a lot, but I was at peace with the story by its conclusion.
