In the first Cole Sage book, we find Cole at the low point of his career. In the past, Cole a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, worked for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Time Magazine. Now, he’s returned to the paper where he started his career, The Chicago Sentinel. Instead of writing the big stories, he’s doing the work of a rookie reporter. His “big story of the day” is a cat caught in a tree. During its rescue, the cat’s owner takes her Good Samaritan neighbor hostage. Cole witnesses something so disturbing it reawakens the journalist’s desire to write again.

Returning to the paper, Cole finds a desperate message asking for help from Ellie, one that got away. The one that has continually haunted his life. Cole drops everything and flies to California. He must find what would make her so desperate, she would call him after so many years. Cole finds her terminally ill, and abandoned by her husband. He discovers while Ellie was heavily medicated, she mistakenly signed a Power of Attorney. Now her estranged daughter Erin’s inheritance, won’t go to her, but her abusive step-father. Cole vows to find the girl and right the situation.

The path to keeping his word is blocked at every turn by the husband who abandoned her, his shady real estate deals, violent con men, street thugs and the lure of a fortune in diamonds that unite them. The anger, sorrow, and crippling guilt of twenty years fires Cole's drive to keep a promise, that in the end, will heal and return the soul to the great journalist.

Beaten, bloody but determined, Cole Sage conquers greed and hatred with a strength that only love, and a will as hard as diamond, can achieve.

The Cole Sage Series has captured the imagination of readers worldwide. All six books in the series consistently get top ratings from reviewers.

Micheal Maxwell has found a niche in the mystery, suspense, genre that gives readers an everyman hero, short on vices, long on compassion, and a sense of fair play, and the willingness to risk everything to right wrongs.

The Cole Sage Series departs from the usual, heavily sexual, profanity laced norm, and gives readers a character driven stories, with twists, turns, and page turning plot lines, but most of all a hero they can relate to and root for with each new case he finds himself involved in.

To be honest, I stumbled upon Diamonds and Cole by accident. At that time I knew nothing about Micheal Maxwell or his writing. I found the book listed as a free book on Kindle and decided to try it. I was immediately hooked and became a Cole Sage fan. Since I’ve read all the books in the series and cannot wait for the next one to appear.

First in a series, love it

I really like the character Cole Sage. Cole is a reporter for the Chicago paper the Sentinel and has lost his “edge”. He has received many awards for his writing, but he is at a loss as to what happened to him. Elie the one that got away sends him an urgent message and he drops everything to go to her in Los Angeles. I like the way Michael Maxwell takes the time to introduce us to Cole with flashes back to his past and scene with Elie in his life. We learn a lot about the man and what makes him tick. Elie is dying and wants Cole to find her estranged daughter, Erin. She also wants him to get the power of attorney that she was forced to sign by her no good husband. In doing this, Cole unravels a web of mob characters and criminal activity. I love the way Cole can “cozy” up to a prospect and win them over with his charm and truthfulness. It is an awesome book and the first in a series.

This was a very well written story. I bought it because it was a mystery but it was so much more. It was a story of love and family with a little violence and greed thrown in for spice. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A Gem- absolute top of form for this genre.

I was impressed with the qulaity of the writing. The story itself took second stage. A variation of the ‘Damsel in Distrss’ plotline.

This is a story of not only a great mystery & about a journalist

I am spellbound by Micheal’s writing! He has a God given gift of “painting pictures” with his words. This is a story of not only a great mystery & about a journalist, but a love lost and love found. The characters are VERY well written about and explained. I adore parts about “Ellie,” the girlfriend found, but most especially our hero- Cole Sage- justice served! He does such a great job bringing the bad guys their just desserts. Well done, Cole! He is truly humbled by his life as he lives it. One character, “Whisper” touches me with his desire to change his ways because of Cole. The BEST part is how Cole begins a new life journey by meeting his daughter, Erin. What a passionate portrayal of real people, living real lives, and finding real hope! Can’t wait to continue reading your #2 and #3 books in the Cole Sage series , Micheal! (already purchased.) And I will be purchasing your 4th book out this month. Yeah!

Enjoyed & highly recommend Cole Sage, quiet unique to my typical mysteries & thrillers I read

Recently discovered Micheal was an author, in fact just finished his 1st Cole Sage novel which I enjoyed very much. My wife & I met Micheal & wife Janet many years ago but fell out of touch. Micheal for many years had a store called Replay Records where you bought, sold & traded vinyl, cd’s etc. He had a deep knowledge of the the artists & their music, loved to visit his store and chat about music & movies. In reading his first novel I noticed he weaved his knowledge into the storyline which made me smile & appreciate Micheal’s work even more. His Cole Sage character exhibits unwavering compassion those that he loves & friends that he meets along the way. He sees people being wronged & strives to make it right whatever it costs. Now on to Cole Sage #2, he just finished 6, so got some reading to do.

A different kind of mystery.

I really cannot add to what others have said. A well written book that flows (did not get my chores done, couldn’t put it down). I was pleased that someone found a way of writing a really good book without a million f bombs. Getting tired of the gratuitous use of foul language and sex. This was a beautiful love story, no, a mystery, no, an indepth character study.. suffice to say it.covered a lot of bases. I rarely cry when reading a book and yes…I did. Will definitely try book #2.

You will be amazed……

I find that most of the time, if a free book is well written, it doesn’t come to a satisfactory conclusion – to get the rest of the story, you must buy the next book. This one is one that challenges that theory. WOW! A well written novel, without gratuitous violence or profanity, in which the protagonist is a settled sensible middle aged man who holds down a job, and is a decent individual interested in doing the right thing? I have to say, this is one of the few times I’ve been blown away by a free book. There are faith issues in here, but it never gets preachy, and it falls outside of typical Christian novels because Cole doesn’t know WHAT he believes, but is still a very moral and upright man. I will read other books in the series BECAUSE this was a complete, well written story that stands alone. Michael Maxwell, my hat is off to you!

An amazing book!

After a briefly slow start, the plot developed in all it’s intricacies as did the personality of the main protagonist, completely involving the reader. What a treat to be allowed to enjoy a fascinating story full of pathos and humour, tenderness and brutality, without being bombarded by blatant sex and foul language. Thank you, Michael Maxwell, for proving that it could be done, and done superbly. Looking forward to more first class prose from you and more adventures in the company of Cole Sage.

Good clean adventure.

I found myself wanting to keep reading until I was done. It was really hard to put it down. I like that it could have romance without being filled with sex. It was a deeper sense of romance than the physical part; the part that really matters. The author was able to stir some pretty strong emotions in me. The only thing that distracted from it was the grammatical errors but the story was great.
